Gieves were a private label (had their own name shown) retailer for Wilkinson Sword. The folding guard section of this sword engraved to the original owner / officer, “G. P. Bewley” who served in the Royal Navy throughout WW2 as a paymaster. Etched with the royal cypher of King George V (died 1936), GP Bewley bought this sword before the war when he was first commissioned.
The well etched 31 1/4 inch blade has wear / age in the form of a few inert dark rust / patina patches, etc. but is still good and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt has lost most of its gilt finish but still is good. The white fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are both good. The leather with brass fittings scabbard is good, a little wear plus some browning tarnish to the brass (would clean / brighten up if desired). The folding guard section works well and locates properly onto the top scabbard locket’s securing pin. The sword sheathes and draws well.
