This is a genuine pre-1854 Wilkinson Sword; it does not have a serial number as Wilkinson only started putting these on their blades in 1854. Etched on the blade “LXXIV” with motto “Nemo me impune lacessit” (no one attacks me with impunity) for the 74th Highland Regiment of Foot, this regiment went to merge with the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot to become the 2nd Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry.

The 33 inch very well etched Claymore type broadsword blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel basket hilt with patina and some very light inert rust patches is in good condition. The black fishskin grip with wear is still very good for its age, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. Scabbard absent.
Stunning basket hilt by Wilkinson Sword in well above average condition. Well worth the was £? (too late, now sold) price tag. Please quote item reference ZZ97. Further / full sized images available upon request. Tube 1788-105×16 (2.516)
