British made, but no maker’s name. US etching style, but no American flag, etc. A circa 1850 (possibly earlier due to the presence of a frog button) Southern American States (probably mounted infantry, maybe artillery due to the scabbard’s drag) officer’s sword that seemingly never made it across the Pond (Atlantic) to the US from Britain. Quite possibly a British maker’s sales sample (both British and German sword makers at the time vied for southern business at the time, but did not want to advertise it and jeopardize their business with northern states).
The supremely well etched 31 inch blade has minimal wear and patina (inert black light rust) patches (mostly towards the point) and is firm in the hilt. The steel stirrup hilt / guard is in good condition but has some age / inert rust patches / spots. The black leather grip has age / wear and is dry with some small patches of loss revealing the wooden base (a permanent felt marker and some leather balsam may be desirable); the grip wire bindings are in good condition. The steel field service scabbard is fairly good but with light rust patches and a ding or two. The sword sheathes and draws well.
