Marked feintly “Trayler & Co” (naval outfitters in Portsmouth) to the ricasso and engraved “C B A” to the scabbard. You can read about Conway Benning Allen’s naval career here. We know it is his dirk because it was sold by his family along with several other items of his (proof in extra images).

The 18 inch blade is in good condition but with some patina / inert rust pitting; blade firm in the hilt. The hilt good. The fishskin grip a little grubby from handling but good; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. Dirk knot aged and worn / fraying but sound. Scabbard a little aged but good. The dirk sheathes and draws well; the button locking pin mechanism still works well. Black carry bag with age and wear but sound.
Very nice example with full provenance. Well worth was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZZ35. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box n/a
