Scarce brass scabbard for a senior Victorian light cavalry officer. British 1821 pattern (model) sword. The blade is aged and worn but the Victorian crown / royal cypher is just visible; no thunder bolts and 32 inch blade, so a cavalry (not artillery) officer’s sword; quite likely yeomanry. No maker’s / retailer’s mark / etching still visible. Circa 1880.
The 32 inch worn blade has an attractive steady patina throughout and is firm in the steel three bar hilt / guard. The fishskin grip has shrunk a little (normal) and is starting to expose its edges around / under the back piece; the twisted silver metal grip wire is good. The sensational brass scabbard has a few tiny dings around the drag, commensurate with being worn while mounted, but is very good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Really atractive sword and brass scabbard; great value at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY99. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1972 99 x 14 x 12 (1.41).
