1822 (not 1845 or 1854) Pattern because it has a pipe back blade and folding guard. The etching now exceptionally feint. No maker’s details visible.
The 32 1/4 inch quill pointed blade has inert pitting, particularly towards the point, but is good / sound and firm in the hilt. The brass “gothic” hilt with folding guard section and King George 4th’s royal cypher to the cartouche has some gilt remaining and is generally very good for something circa 200 years old; the folding guard section still works and there is very little distortion to the guard (these Gothic hilted swords have brass hilts, prone to dents, etc.). The fishskin grip has shrunk a little exposing the edges around the back piece, plus there are a couple of small wear / moth holes, but is pretty good considering; so too the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The leather with brass fittings scabbard has age, wear and has shrunk a little (from dryness), but is still good for its age. The sword sheathes and draws pretty well.
Good honest example at a fair price; £575. Please quote item reference ZY93. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1961 100 x 16 x 15 (2.041).
