Plenty of old nicks to the cutting edge; maybe period. Marked “Read” to blade; Thomas Read, 1750-1770. This early lion’s head sword is often described as a dog’s head sword as the lion is very early / primitive in composition. An ivory sales permit will be provided to the buyer. English made, possibly a Colonial American (USA) officer’s sword. Used by army and naval officers alike.

The 24 7/8 inch blade is in aged but good condition, save for the nicks, and firm in the hilt. The hilt has broken away from the lion’s head pommel; a common problem as it was only secured with a small frail flange; with evidence of a much later soldered attempt to “repair”. Otherwise, the hilt / guard is good. Typical spiraled ivory grip has age hairline cracks but is very good nonetheless. Scabbard absent.
Rare sword at a scarce low price of was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY83. Further / full sized images available on request. Box 1944 85 x 16 x 15 (1.019).
