“Sheldon” (or “Heldon”), plus “16/5 L” (5th Lancers) to the frog strap of the leather scabbard; Researchers! But no maker’s or retailer’s details etched to the blade, which implies the sword dates to circa 1917, the height of WW1 when production needs outweighed such fine detail niceties. In any event, the sword is almost certainly an antique (over 100 years old) and has been kept very well to be in such good condition.
The 34 7/8 inch well etched blade is in very good condition, aside from some interesting patina patterning, and firm in the hilt. The hilt / bowl guard in very good condition. The black fishskin grip a little worn smooth but good; the associated grip wire bindings also good. The leather sword knot a tad dry and aged / worn, but good. Both scabbards in good condition. The heavy / thick leather carry bag is dry and aged but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A cracking example with both scabbards; worth every penny of £750. Please quote reference ZY72. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1929 115 x 26 x 27 ( 3.785).
