Charles Reynolds Sharp’s Boer War naval history can be seen here. This sword is Edwardian (Edward VII / George V), most likely WW1 when we believe midshipman Sharp made the rank of lieutenant; he went on to the rank of Commander. We have not seen much about his WW1 service / life, but know he survived that war as we found a 1920 UK Hydrographic Office file (HD/1920/823) which entry reads “Acting Commander C R Sharp SNO and Kings’ Harbour Master Berehaven request for (N) allowance statement that (N) allowance should be paid to all officers appointed as KHM or assist KHM, 1920”. Researchers!
The sword blade is etched at the forte / ricasso to “J Gieve & Sons Portsmouth”.

The 31 3/8 inch blade is well etched with fouled anchor under crown one side, the British Royal Coat of Arms to the obverse. Blade with some patches of patina is in good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt is in good condition and retains much gilt; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard. The fishskin grip is a little worn and grubby, but good. The twisted grip wire bindings are a little wayward in a very few place, but are still good. The original sword knot is a great bonus but is grubby / worn and frayed. The leather and brass scabbard has a few small kinks / dings in it, but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Great history, very nice sword, nicer price; £675. Please quote item reference ZY71. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1925 97 x 15 x 16 (1.879).
