Mid Victorian / 19th Century Royal Navy / Naval Officer’s Sword by token of the folding guard without a scabbard securing pin hole (because the scabbard does not have a securing pin), and early etching (not deep acid etched). The top scabbard fitting embossed and the blade etched at the forte / ricasso to “Selby, Portsmouth”; John Charles Selby was a renowned naval outfitter. This sword dates to circa 1850, so was around during the Crimean War.

The 31 inch well etched blade has two wide bands of patina both sides midway down, plus various smaller patches elsewhere, but is in otherwise quite good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt with Victorian Crown to the cartouche is in very good condition, much gilt remaining, the folding guard section working well. The suuperb large nodules fishskin grip is very good but a tad grubby one side; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. The brown (truly faded black revealing the brown original hide colour) leather is aged, with a tear towards the chape that extends both sides (only a slither of connecting leather remains), now “repaired” with a synthetic tape. The brass fittings of the scabbard blackened by age / tarnish are dented here and there, but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
