The scarcest of Royal Naval swords with a plain domed pommel (instead of a lion’s head for an officer), a very good condition Master at Arms sword, etched at the forte / ricasso to “J Cracknell Queen St Portsmouth”.
The 31 3/8 inch blade is well etched and in good condition, some small patina patches, and firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt is in very good condition (some spots of gilt gone) with much gilt remaining; the folding guard section works well and locates properly onto the retaining pin of the scabbard. The blackened fishskin grip is in very good shape if a little faded; the grip wire bindings are good. The black leather with brass fittings scabbard is very good, some surface deterioration but not too much. The sword sheathes and draws well but leaves a very small gap with the hilt when the locking mechanism is employed.
Rare and well above average condition; it won’t be ours for long at £750. Please quote item reference ZY67. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1926 98 x 16 x 15 (1.753).
