The WW1 Royal Navy sword of 2nd Lieut William Henry Bywater who was a senior naval rating on HMS Essex until he made officer in October 1917. We believe he survived WW1 only to be killed early WW2. Plenty of research potential.
Engraved “W H Bywater” to the top locket of the scabbard and marked “W H B” to the hood of the leather carry bag. Etched “GIEVES Ltd London Portsmouth Edinburgh Devonport” to the forte / ricasso of the blade.

The well etched 31 1/4 blade has a few patina patched but remains good and is firm in the hilt. The brass hilt with some age is still good and the folding guard section works well and locates properly onto the scabbard’s securing pin. The fishskin grip is very good, so too the twisted grip wire bindings. The original sword knot is showing its age; dulled and frayed, but sound. The scabbard has age / uniform rubbing wear but is good and the sword sheathes / draws well. The leather carry bag has age, is dry, and the hood has separated from the body (can be restitched).
A truly great naval sword ensemble for only was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY54. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1908 107 x 16 x 15 (2.243)
