Correctly engraved to Châtellerault French state armaments maker in February 1884, the straight blade and engraving show this sword is a m1882 for heavy cavalry (“Line Cavalry”). Rare in that this one has its original leather frog. Rack / weapon number 35 on the hilt, there is no visible number on the scabbard which may be due to the thickness of the (presumed) original paint.
The plain 34 inch straight blade is in good condition, some wear, some patina patches near the point, and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard has a pleasing bronze colour age tarnish and is in good condition. The grip is aged and worn but good; most of the twisted grip wire bindings have gone. The blackened scabbard is in good condition. The leather suspension frog is aged / dry but good. The sword sheathes and draws well but can catch when sheathing if not perfectly straight / aligned with the scabbard.
Lovely example, especially with the frog. Yours for £700. Please quote item reference ZY38. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1685 115x20x20 (2.619).
