In good condition, a British 1856p Infantry Pioneer’s Sawback Wilkinson Sword & Scabbard

Marked on the guard / hilt “6 1901 V 1. HTS 15” for June 1901, Volunteers, 1st Battalion of the Hanmpshire Regiment, weapon 15 (NB “Hants” is the common abbreviation for “Hampshire”, abbreviated further to “HTS” by the British Army.
The 1856p was issued to a 10 man squad of Pioneers within each infantry battalion. Their duties were to clear obstacles and supervise heavy construction work.



The regulation 22 1/2 inch blade with serated sawback back edge is well stamped, in good condition and firm in the hilt and grip. The heavy brass hilt / guard and riveted (through the tang of the blade) ribbed grip are in good condition, with a pleasing aged honey patina. The leather of the scabbard is aged and surface crumbling, but still sound. The sword sheathes and draws well.
