Blade etched at the forte / ricasso to “J Rayner & Sons, 4 Lord Street, Liverpool”. Royal Naval Reserve swords like this one are scarcer than standard RN officer swords. The grip is black not white as the owner was a junior officer, e.g. a sub-lieutenant, which makes the sword scarcer still (juior officer swords being less common than regular officer swords). Finally, adding to scarcity further, this sword not only has “R N R” to the guard, but etched to the blade as well (many do not).
The well etched 31 3/8 inch blade is in very good condition save for a few small patina patches, plus firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard with crowned fouled anchor and “R N R” to the cartouche has some tarnish / age but is good; the folding guard section works. The black fishskin grip has faded in colour (most people might simply apply some black liquid shoe polish) but is in good condition, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The sword knot is aged / a little grubby but good. The leather wth brass fittings scabbard has a kink towards the chape but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A very good example at a very good price of £550. Please quote item reference ZY35. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1878 100 x 16 x 17 (1.84).
