Circa 1800; probably a midshipman’s but possibly a more senior officer’s dirk. Most likely the blade was made in Solingen, as most circa 1800 blades of this “flattened diamond” type were, with the “furniture” (fittings) crafted by an English cutler. Likely to be a Battle of Traflgar era Napoleonic British Royal Naval midshipman’s (or more senior officer’s) dirk, but it might have been a merchant officer’s bladed weapon.
The ivory submission reference (registration number) will be provided to the purchaser.

The 9 inch / 23cm blade is aged with some feint etching remaining, plus a few small patches of inert dark pitting, and firm in the hilt and grip. The gilt brass hilt with gilt brass cross-guard decorated with foliage is in good condition. The turned ivory grip has normal age slight yellowing and a few age cracks and shallow holes, but is good. The brass fittings leather scabbard with two suspension rings is aged with a crease to the leather and age / wear but still good. The dirk sheathes and draws well.
A great looking dirk at a good looking price; £550. Please quote item reference ZY32. Further / full sized images available upon request. Tube 1857 36×8 (0.32).
