Etched to the Army & Navy Cooperative Society London (most of their swords were made by Wilkinson) at the forte / ricasso, blade further etched “Presented by the Marine Society to Ernest George Wye on his attaining Warrant rank in the Royal Navy 1st January 1928”.
Born 7th October 1897, Ernest George Wye apperently joined the Royal Navy as an enlisted sea rating before WW1 and served throughout that war. He was active during WW2 also; at the outbreak he was in the Royal Naval Reserve as a Commander Gunner and saw the war through, at the end serving aboard HMS Adamant (submarine supply ship) as a Commissioned Gunner. Plenty more research to be done!
The 31 1/2 inch blade is in good condition for nearly 100 years old, well wtched and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard with some age (loss of original surface gilt) but otherwise good. The fishkin grip a little grubby but good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The original sword knot has age, is frayed in places and a little grubby, but is sound. The leather of the scabbard has surface age and a kink near the chape but is still good for its age. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Nice sword with plenty of research potential. A great buy, just £600. Please quote item reference ZY28. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1862 98x11x11 (1.58)
