The old 60’s era label that was attached to the carry bag identify the former officer owner as Lt. Col. C. N. Clayden, “Norman”, an ornithologist, who was appointed as the first UK MOD (Ministry of Defence) conservation officer in 1973. The label has his former address in British Guiana, crossed out on one side, so he was there prior to 196 when it gained independence and became Guyana. Norman had his George V (so he was serving during WW2) sword refurbished / replated, hence the blade etching is feint and a hex nut added to secure the blade tang to the pommel / hilt. The black all weather carry bag implies very wet / humid conditions. So, plenty of interesting research potential!
Norman’s service number was 174741 and he resigned as an active army officer on the 30th June 1973.
The 32 inch blade is in very good condition but the etching is very feint. Blade firm in the hilt / grip. The plated guard / gilt is very good. The original fishskin grip is good but has a couple f small patches and a few speck size areas of wear; the twisted grip wire bindings are good. The leather field service scabbard has old scrapes and scratches but is still good; sword frog generally good. The black all weather carry bag is aged but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Very interesting sword at a very interesting price; £550. Please quote item reference ZY26. Further / full sized image available upon request Box 1847 120x18x16 (2.287).
