Made by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen for the Prussian Guard Hussar Regiment in 1850 (hence the Prussian crown 50 mark on the spine) to trial; they rejected the sword and opted for another design. S&K sold the swords they made on the open market in Liege (Belgium) to the British in around 1852, hence the British crown over L and 8 view inspection mark to the blade. They were then issued to British Royal Engineer Drivers for use in the Crimea. There were not many engineer drivers and not many of these swords; this is a rare one of that number.
The cutting edge of the blade has a few nicks, almost certainly recent. We could have filed the nicks’ burr (raised edges) down and claimed they were period, but we don’t do such things, although you could and spin some yarn with your friends!
The 34 5/8 inch blade is in very good condition but with multiple nicks; is firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard has a steady light pitting but is good. The grip with some minor scuffs and patches of surface leather loss but is also overall good. The very solidly built steel scabbard has light pitting in places but is also good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
