Circa 1775-1780, the Running Fox mark used by quality Birmingham (England) sword makers (such as Samuel Harvey) during the American War of Independence. This one has clear period (no burr, patina runs right into the damage) shrapnel or grape shot damage.
The 24 1/2 inch blade has battle damage in the form of shot / shrapnel indentations and edge damage too; it has clearly been through the wars. Running Fox quality mark both sides of the blade. Blade firm in the grip but some typical movement in the hilt / guard. The hilt / guard with some distortion / bending commensurate with battle damage is nonetheless quite good, but the original silver twisted wire grip surface layer has long gone. Scabbard absent.
I bet this sword could tell some horror stories. Own and hold it for just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY24. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1832 88x14x14 (1.152).
