VGC = Very Good Condition. Etched to J Daniels (sword cutler) Woolwich, probably circa 1875 and likely saw service in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, not least as there are a few small seemingly period nicks to the blade; the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) also later saw active service in the Boer War (South Africa).
The period sharpened 35 inch blade is mostly very good, but has some light pitting towards the point and some nicks. Blade firm in the hilt; the guard with “6” and crossed rifles regimental badge. Steel hilt in good condition, a little age. The fishskin grip has wear, quite a bit, which lends into it having seen active service; but the grip is good overall, just the areas of the grip which suffer most wear in combat has worn down / small sectional losses (under the pommel and right behind the guard). The twisted grip wire bindings are present a little wayward in places (again to do with harsh combat use wear). The steel scabbard has a couple of dings / dents also commensurate with active service, but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
This sword has clearly seen action, most likely in Afghanistan, maybe South Africa. The regimental guard makes this a bargain at just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY17. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1834 106x14x14 (1.9).
