Etched at the ricasso / forte to “J. A&N. S. Ltd. Regent St. S.W. (London)” for the Junior Army & Navy Stores Ltd who used that trading style from 1935. As there is no Royal Cypher, just the British Royal Coat of Arms etched to the blade, the sword is George V who died in January 1936, so pretty much dating the sword to 1935. It is therefore very likely that the officer owner would have served in World War Two. Wilkinson made Junior Army & Navy Stores Ltd’s swords for them. Better known in more recent times as simply the “Army and Navy Stores”, they were bought out by and rebranded House of Fraser in 2005. Serial number 6924 to the blade’s spine. RNR Royal Naval Reserve swords like this are much rarer than normal Royal Naval officer swords, and RNR officers very much played active command roles during WW2.
The 31 1/4 inch exceptionally well etched blade has a few very small patina spots towards the point but otherwise is in exceptionally good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard has much gilt remaining and is in good condition. The white fishskin grip is very good as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings, although one lesser strand is slightly wayward one grip turn. The original sword knot is very good but is frayed around the clasp. The scabbard has some relatively minor surface scrapes / scuffs to the leather, but is otherwise good and the folding guard section locates onto the scabbard securing pin as it should. The sword sheathes and draws well. The black all weather bag is aged and creased and cracked commensurate with its age and service life.
