No maker’s or retailer’s details etched to the ricasso, very much suggesting manufacture was during World War Two. Engraved “R. Smith, R.N.” to the folding guard section. This sword is believed to be the former property of Lieut Robert Thomas Smith who was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1942 and served on several submarines including HMS Stubborn and HMS Trusty during the war.

The 31 3/8 inch blade is well etched and in very good condition, some small speckles of light rust spots and wear, firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with much gilt finish remaining is in very good condition; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the scabbard top locket’s retaining pin. The fishskin grip is good, but a little wear / grubbiness evident; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. The sword knot is aged but good, a little frayed around / due to the sword cord slit near the pommel. The patent leather and brass fittings scabbard has a small leather scrape and some wear but is good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Really nice, well above average WW2 RN officer’s sword with research potential. Well priced at £600. Please quote item reference ZY04. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1808-107x17x15 (1.777)
