A rare plain bladed example or the blade has been cleaned a little too much as the etching is no more (we believe it was made plain), but the top scabbard locket is embossed “MACKAY & Co, NAVAL OUTFITTERS, DEVONPORT”. A short (not shortened) blade for wearing en board, where conditions are often cramped.
The 25 3/4 inch blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard with Victorian crown over fouled anchor motif to the cartouche is good; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard’s top locket. The remains of the original sword knot are as see. The leather and brass fitting scabbard has some shinkage and wear, the fittings loose, but sound. The sword sheathes and draws well if a little tight due to the leather having shrunk a tad.
Interesting plain bladed example, just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY03. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1813-92x14x12 (1.304)
