GRI = George V India Service (though most British GRI officers fought in Europe during WW1, often with Indian troops under their command).
Etched “Hawksworth Sheffield” to the blade’s forte / ricasso. This is a quality sword but the hilt / guard has suffered creeping rust from the edges; if the hilt were to be stripped down and replated, it would be a fine sword indeed as the blade and everything else is very good.
Original owner officer’s initials “L. A. P. A.” to the hood of the field service leather carry bag provides identification research potential!
The quality 32 1/4 inch well etched blade has been period sharpened at the tip and is both in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The plated steel GRI hilt / guard has the previously mentioned edge rust issue, but is otherwise good. The black fishskin grip and silver twisted grip wire bindings are both very good. The original leather field service sword knot is aged but sound / fairly good still. The plated steel scabbard is mostly good; some tarnish which would probably clean / shine up with a decent polish and a few minor dings. The sword sheathes and draws well. The leather carry bag is aged but still good, though the hood has detached from the main body.
