Complete with sword knot, scabbard and carry bag. This is a genuine Wilkinson Sword but the serial number has clearly been filed out / removed for whatever reason, perhaps by the officer who felt a serial number reeked of it being an issued sword. A fine quality sword in unbelievably good condition and bearing te officer’s family coat of arms and initials, “C H M”; researchers! NB, the coat of arms bearing a muzzled boars head is used by a number of mostly Scottish families, including the MacBhreatneaich, Galbraith, Harewood and MacKay clans / families. Boer War era with signs of arduous service wear to the grip.
The fine / well etched 32 1/4 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt with Victorian crown over strung powder keg for a rifles officer, has some age (small patina patches) but is very good besides. The fishskin grip has wear but remains good; the twisted grip wire bindings also good though one and then two lesser strands gone as you approach under the pommel (clear sign of the sword being held tightly and often). The leather sword knot complete but aged and worn. The plated steel scabbard with some patina specks is otherwise very good. The leather carry case is complete but aged, though still good and sound. The sword sheathes and draws well.
What a superb sword with research potential which could significantly increase the value of the sword. Just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZX99. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2068 107 x 16 x 15 (2.494).
