A British Crown View (Inspection / Acceptance) mark is just visible on the blade, with nicks to the forward cutting edge and a well worn grip, showing this 1796 pattern Waterloo era British Cavalry Sergeant’s Sabre / Sword is well used. The view / acceptance mark, the period nicks and the worn grip very much indicate a harsh / long service life and likely combat use, perhaps at that most famous of Napoleonic battles during the 100 Days War (culminating in the Battle of Waterloo). An officer’s sabre (lighter scabbard, fishskin grip, cursive grip ears) but for the plain blade and view mark. No maker’s details or other markings except the view mark.

The 30 3/4 inch curved period sharpened blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt and stirrup guard are in good shape. The fishskin grip is well worn, particularly one side where the wood base is exposed in various places. The siver metal twisted grip wire bindings are present and in good shape. The steel scabbard has a couple of minor dings (dents) and some patchy patina, plus has lost its suspension rings, but is in good condition for its 200+ year age. The sword sheathes and draws quite well.
Scarce sergeant’s example of a Waterloo era 1796P British light cavalry sword in above average condition. An absolute steal at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZX60. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 2038 97 x 20 x 20 (1.451).
