With the Running Fox mark used by England’s top sword makers in Birmingham, including but not limited to Samuel Harvey, this English / British infantry officer’s hanger / short sword dates to around 1780, the height of the US Revolutionary War (American War of Independence); who knows, it may have been there! There are some very feint markings on the blade that could be a maker’s name, or just age / wear marks that appear to be letters.

The 27 1/2 inch blade is aged, some shallow inert rust blisters, but good generally and quite firm (some small movement) in the hilt. The ornate steel guard has age / wear / patina / light inert rust but is sound / good. The ebonized wood grip has a small chip missing under the pommel but is otherwise good; the twisted grip wire bindings are significantly diminished (multiple turns gone, some remaining turns are loose) but enough there for a rebinding match. Scabbard absent.
