Etched to J Gieves & Sons, High St, Portsmouth to the ricasso / forte; this dates the sword from 1896 – 1901. Engraved “H R Russell, R.N” to the folding guard. We believe it the same RN officer as Paymr. Capt. H. R. Russell, C.B., C.M.G., who retired with the rank of Paymr. Rear-Admiral on the 1st July, 1929. Whether Captain / Rear-Admiral H. R. Russell was a paymaster throughout his naval career or saw active service in WW1 for example, we do not know.

The 31 1/4 inch blade is in quite good condition, some age / wear / patina / minor pitting, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt has some age but is good. The white fishskin grip is a little grubby and has a small patch loss under the pommel but is generally otherwise good. The twisted grip wire bindings have some small movement but are good. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is aged but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Good example at a nice price: £550. Please quote item reference ZX55. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 2043 106 x 16 x 16 (2.041).
