Robert Mole of Birmingham made 1895 pattern Victorian British infantry officer’s sword, serial number M2676. As the 1895p was replaced by the 1897p (same sword but with a turned down inner guard to help prevent tunic wear), this sword therefore dates from 1895 to 1897; the late VR / Victorian period. The black sword knot shows the officer was a rifles officer within a regular regiment. The 1895p is much scarcer than the 1897p because the 1895p was only a regulation pattern for a short time and within a relatively peaceful period for the British Empire, plus the 1897p is still the current regulation pattern to this day, so many many more later 1897p’s were made (especially during the wars).
Robert Mole is recognized for their / his top quality swords and were makers for the British War and India Offices.
The exceptionally well etched 32 inch blade is in very good condition, some wear, and firm in the hilt. The steel guard / hilt is also in good condition. The black fishskin grip has some wear (smoothing of the ray skin nodules) but is good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The black leather sword knot is aged but good. The leather field service scabbard has wear and scuffs etc. but is good for its age. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A truly very good condition example of an 1895p from perhaps the top maker; yours for £525. Please quote item reference ZX44. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2012 107 x 16 x 15 (1.851).
