Born 1885 – died 6th November 1943 (rank of Captain) during WW2. It appears that Francis Fernley Smith entered the Royal Navy as a carpenter before or during WW1. The picture is him in 2nd Lieutenant’s uniform holding this very sword; photo included. Further research needed!
Blade etched at the forte / ricasso to “Pote & Son 46 Fore Street Devonport”; Pote and Son are recorded at that address in 1914. The blade has a GV cypher, instead of a British Royal Coat of Arms, indicating the sword was made well after WW1.
The 31 1/4 inch well etched blade is in very good, almost new condition, and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard has much gilt finish remaining and is in good condition; the folding guard section working well and locates onto the top scabbard locket’s securing pin. The white fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are both very good. The original sword knot is dull and a little grubby from age and use. The leather of the scabbard has slight surface crack lines in places and the brass fittings have lost their gilt. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Very good condition sword more than justifies the price tag of £600. Please quote item reference ZX36. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 1993 105 x 16 x 16 (2.018).
