HMS Reward sank in 1976 after a collision with a German freighter. Lieut G. Havelock was en board HMS Reward with this very sword when it went down; Lieut G. Havelock made it off the vessel but this sword did not! The sword was subsequently retrieved when they raised HMS Reward (it was a danger to other shipping) but the blade had started to corrode. The hilt and grip were cleaned up, and the knot, scabbard and carry bag replaced. Which is why this sword looks in very good condition until you draw it from the scabbard and inspect the blade. Parade ground condition unless and until you see the blade!
The 31 inch blade has corrosion paatches, including the serial number, but is in sound condition and firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt / guard is very good (practically all gilt remaining), as is the grip; the twisted grip wire bindings also good. Sword knot good. Leather and gilt brass scabbard good; the sword sheathes and draws well. Synthetic carry bag is good.
A really interesting sword that can be used for ceremonial purposes (just don’t unsheath it!); £600. Please quote item reference ZX35. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1991 107 x 16 x 15 (1.975).
