*A presumed 1888 Pattern due to the finger recessed wood grip, flying officer’s sword courtesy of the plane etching to one side of the blade, plus naval officer’s sword courtesy of the large naval rope to the obverse. A genuine Italian naval aviator’s sword? How rare is that? Maybe WW2; the plane etching is of an early monoplane, so post-WW1. Etching includes the Cross of Savoy, so 1861 to the end of WW2. Unlikely to be an army officer’s sword because of the fine dress weight blade. The folding guard typical of naval swords. Likely to be a junior officer’s sword due to the plain hilt / guard. In any event, a very rare sword which we have been unable to find another example of; so maybe our bargain of the year or even decade.
The supremely well etched 31 3/8 inch length blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The plain brass bowl guard with folding section is in good condition. The blackened wood grip with finger indentations has wear (loss of surface blackening) but is good. The leather with brass fittings scabbard has wear / minor dings / scuffs but is good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Bargain of the year / decade? You decide. £700. Please quote item reference ZX21. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 2007 105 x 15 x 14 (0.99).
