This is the official Prussian brannschweigischer (fire fighter) sabel / officer’s sword, one side of the forte marked with the WK&C Kings and Knight’s Head Trademark of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, the obverse “Expressly manufactured in Germany for A. J. Daw & Co Calcutta”! Ashoo Tosh Daw & Co, gun and arms dealer, established in 1846, are still in business today.
Was it for a firefighting officer, or a Prusssian army officer adviser (as the model is basically a copy of the British rifle regiment officer’s sword) is a matter of speculation / conjecture maybe, but the sword is exceptionally rare in any event.
The Wilhelm II royal cypher dates the sword to 1888 or later.
The feintly etched 31 1/2 inch blade has some small patches of patina and is aged / worn but still in good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt / guard with Kaiser Wilhelm II ‘s royal cypher has a pleasing patina and is in very good condition. The fishskin grip has a wear loss patch under the pommel but is otherwise very good. The silver metal twisted grip wire bindings are very good but a lesser strand is absent on one turn. The plated steel scabbard has age etc but is very good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Incredibly rare sword, probably well under-priced at £900. Please quote item reference ZX02. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1970 103 x 15 x 14 (1.783).
