Engraved “J Stone Portsea” to the ricasso / forte. Slightly curved blade, no retaining pin to the scabbard or respective hole to the folding guard section of the hilt; mid Victorian, circa 1865-1870. Black fishskin grip for a junior Royal Naval officer. Junior officer swords are much scarcer than white fishskin grip regular officer swords.
The well etched 31 1/8 inch blade has patina and wear but remains good and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt with Victorian crown to the guard’s cartouche is good; the folding guard section works well. Thee black fishskin grip is very good, the associated twisted grip wire bindings also good. The blackened leather with brass fittings scabbard has age and wear but is good for its 150+ years old age. The sword sheathes and draws well.
