Guaranteed authnetic – NOT one of the many Indian made reproductions being sold as genuine Waterloo French heavy cavalry trooper’s sword.
How do we know this sword is authentic and likely was there / came from the Battle of Waterloo?
2) Correct Poinçons (inspection stamps for that date). Three, not two as with most reproductions.
3) The tip has been modified to part spear point, which field modification happened just before Waterloo, to improve armour piercing ability.
4) No post 1815 poinçons, so the sword did not stay in French service.
5) The hilt / guard has not been repalced with the 1816 model with forward facing edges.
6) Only 12 grip turns – graps after 1815 (including new grips) typically had 22.
7) It has been in the UK for time immemorial, so a probable batllefield pick up / trophy.
Given the sword / blade dates to 1811, it likely saw action first in the French Invasion of Russia in 1812. The point has only been partially spear pointed to preserve as much length as possible. Early hilt / guard markings and grip (slightly convex); the “2” on the pommel likely to identify the regiment, the 2nd French Cuirassiers who suffered many losses at the hands of Allied infantry squares and artillery.
The almighty 37 7/8 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The solid / heavy brass guard / hilt is in good aged condition, with a nice patina. The original leather grip is aged but sound/ quite good, though the twisted grip wire bindings are mostly gone. The “Mark 3” scabbard prevalent at Waterloo is aged but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
