Marked for maker Imperial Klingenthal and dated April 1813 to the blade’s spine, with correct poinçons (inspection stamps) for Krantz, Bick and Lobstein to the forte. This is a scarce An XI Imperial / Napoleonic French light cavalry trooper’s sabre, which was around during the Battle of Waterloo (18th June 1815). Was it at the battle? We can not in all honesty say. The previous owner bought it in France, so it is likely not an allied / British war trophy. But maybe it was there….
The curved 34 1/2 inch blade is in good though aged condition, some wear / scrapes and a few nicks, the point has a very slight wriggle indicating a fall or strike. Blade firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard good, though with age and a hairline crack to one bar, again commensurate with a fall. The original ribbed leather grip has age and a small patch gone, but is sound / good; both brass “olives” are present. The rigorously cleaned steel scabbard is very good; the sabre sheathes and draws a tad loosely but well.
