An authentic, likely Solingen made, 1840m C.S.A. (Confederate States Army) Cavalry Trooper’s “Wristbreaker” Saber / Sword.
Authentic? Yes! Look at the worn / aged grip and worn blade markings!
Confederate States Army? Yes! Typical US rack (weapon) number markings to the knucklebow and pommel but the blade markings are NOT Union markings, for sure! Plus, no maker’s details because Solingen sword makers, sure that the Union would win over the Confederates, kept their names out of it so as not to jeopardize their future buesiness relations with the victors!
The “V (seemingly double struck as did often happen) & A” blade marking most likely is for the Virginia and Ashby’s cavalry regiment. “1862” is clear enough, the year after the start of the US Civil War. The “78” to both the knucklebow of the guard and the hilt’s pommel are the weapon / rack number.
VGC = Very Good Condition
The 35 inch plain blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard has a steady age patina but is good. The original leather grip has a lot of age and wear, some small gaps, but is sound; the original twisted grip wire bindings are mostly gone (recently replaced). The steel scabbard is overall good, some small dings towards the drag. The saber sheathes and draws well, but tightly at the end when fully sheathed.
What a great Confederate States 1840m, and at a price well below what US dealers would sell it for, just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZW48. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2132 116 x 13 x 13 (2.289).
