Superceded by the m1860 but approximately half of the cavalry trooper sabers used in the United States Civil War were the m1840, especially by the Confederate Cavalry. This one was clearly issued to a regiment as it has a rack number (“94”) to the guard bar where it joins with the pommel.
The 34 3/4 inch blade is in very good condition, some small patina patches (mostly one side) and firm in the holt. The hilt / guard is in good condition also. The ribbed leather grip is good for its age, some surface patch losses, but most of the twisted grip bindings are gone. The steel scabbard has age and wear but remains good. The saber / sabre sheaths and draws well.
Great, above average condition example of this famous / iconic US cavalry trooper’s sword, just £550. Please quote item reference ZV91. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
