VGC = Very Good Condition. Engraved “J H Macnair RN” to the folding guard. The blade is very well deep etched, marked to renowned naval outfitters “Gieves Portsmouth London & Devonport” at the forte / ricasso, with a “P” proof stud to the obverse, likely for maker Pillin.
John Hamilton Macnair likely bought this sword in 1912 when he was first commissioned into the Royal Navy. You can see his naval officer’s history here, including mention of the Battle of Jutland aboard the battlecruiser HMS Inflexible. See also here.
The 31 1/4 inch dress weight / width very well etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt is very good and the folding guard section works well and secures onto the pin of the scabbard’s top locket. The white fishskin grip is in very good and clean condition; the twisted grip wire bindings are also very good. The leather and gilt brass scabbard is very good for its age. The sword sheathes and draws well.
