Etched to the ricasso “A W J Jolliffe Devonport” with a black fishskin grip; this is a scarce junior Royal Navy officer’s sword. Very nice hilt design in that the folding guard section has a hole for the scabbard’s retaining pin, but the hole does not go through to the other side.
The blade we have left with its period yellow varnish on; varnish was used in Victorian times to protect the blade from rust once the officer retired his sword (and it does a very good job); easily removed with white spirit if the new owner so desires. I|f left on, it should keep the blade safe from moisture for at least another 100 years!
The 31 inch well etched varnished blade is in very good condition, some small patina patches, and firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt / guard is in very good condition, the surface layer of gilt is still bright; folding guard section works well. The black fishskin grip is good but has a little wear and a small moth hole one side; no twisted grip wire bindings. The leather and brass fittings scabbard has some age, but is very good for its age. The sword sheathes and draws well. Original sword knot sound but aged and frayed in places.
