The steel scabbard shows this sword was made for a rifles regiment light infantry officer who expected to go into combat, perhaps the First Boer War. That same steel scabbard has kept the blade in near mint condition over the circa 145 years since it was likely made. The lack of a retailer’s name to the forte / ricasso implies the officer needed it quickly, perhaps before sailing to South Africa. Circa 1880.
The 32 1/2 inch very well etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt / guard is solid / sound but has a steady patina throughout. The black fishskin grip has faded / some wear / a few very small patch losses around the edges but is nonetheless in good condition (NB: there is a small loose fleck of blue tissue paper on it in the photos, now removed / fallen off); twisted grip wire bindings are good. The steel field service scabbard has eggshell appearance patches of patina throughout but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A superb late Victorian British light infantry / rifle regiment officer’s sword in well above average condition but at a well below average price for such a sword of £550. Please quote item reference ZV34. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2267 102 x 13 x 13 (1.97).
