VGC = very good condition. Earlier blade, serial number 36106 for 1898. Original owner’s initials “CJC” etched to blade. The blade was rehilted into an 1827 pattern rifle officer’s hilt / guard, hence the pommel hex nut. The blade has been very well re-etched with GV royal cypher for King George 5th. Later stamped “LDD (4)” to blade; this non-standard abbreviation likely is for “(place name) District Depot number 4”, but that is our speculation only. The original sword / blade was sold by Wilkinson to Messrs. Wright & Sons on the 8th September 1898, so no officer name there. But, it may be possible to determine who the officer was by gettin a copy of Hart’s Army List for the year after (1899) and search for “C J C”.
The 32 1/8 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The plated steel hilt / guard also in very good condition (caveat: unable to see fully under sword knot). The black fishskin grip a little faded and worn remains good; the twisted grip wire bindings also good. Black leather sword knot is good. The plated steel scabbard with some age / wear is good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
