With folding guard to the “Gothic Hilt” and a pipe back blade, this is an 1822 pattern British infantry officer’s sword with Victorian VR Royal Cypher to the guard; 1822 to 1837. The very tip end has been period rounded (made child safe) for the officer’s retirement purposes (or was possibly left in an opponent!)..
The 31 7/8 inch plain blade has a steady patina throughout and is in good condition, plus firm in the hilt (slight gap where it meets the hilt due to absent leather scabbard stop). The brass hilt has some disformed areas (common for these frail brass hilts); the folding guard section still works. The fishskin grip has a little fading and wear but is in well above average condition for its age; associated twisted grip wire bindings also very good. The steel and leather scabbard is possibly a period replacement; it is in aged / worn but quite good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A cracking (good) 1822P for a very good (low) price; £400. Please quote item reference ZV04. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
