VGC = Very Good Condition.
The spine is engraved “Manufacture nationale d’armes de Chatellerault juin 1866 (rubbed feint from here) – Adj’t d’Infrie Mle 1845,” indicating that the sword was made at the Chatellerault armoury in June 1866. A very good example of a French m1845 Infantry Adjutant’s / Sergeant’s / NCO’s sword. The modele 1845 was the most popular and widely used French army / infantry swords; in service from 1845 up to WW1. Some French National Guards still use it today.
The poincon inspection stamps are under the blade’s scabbard buffer / washer.
The 30 inch plain twin fullered blade is in very good condition (indentation from scabbard guide) and firm in the hilt. The gilt brass guard / hilt is a little aged / worn but very good. The ridged horn grip is a little worn and aged but good; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are also very good. The steel field service scabbard is aged and worn but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A truly great / well above example of the iconic French m1845 Army adjutant’s sword for just £550. Please quote item reference ZU56. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
