Etched at the forte / ricasso to F Barnes & Co of 109 Fenchurch Street London; a notable gun, rifle, and pistol manufacturer. This early Victorian British Royal Navy / Naval Officer’s Pipe Back Sword with original scabbard has much blade etching remaining and is circa 1840.
The 30 1/4 inch pipe backed quill pointed blade is in worn / aged but good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt is in good condition and the folding guard section works well. The fishskin grip is in good condition, but a little aged (grubby); the twisted grip wire bindings are good but a lesser strand is a tad astray here and there. The leather and brass scabbard is aged with wear and several kinks to the leather; the sword sheathes and draws well if a little tight.
