A 1796P light cavalry officer’s sword variant (enhanced cross guard) that is interesting beyond that; the cutting edge of the blade has period nicks (no burring) and a numbered (204) blade. WE believe this is a volunteer / yeomanry Cumberland Hussars sabre; the Cumberland Hussars, two units of which served alongside / with the 23rd Light Dragoons at Waterloo. Why do we think this sabre may have been one of the Cumberland Hussars? Because they were “dandies”, wealthy young men. Which other volunteer regiment would have 204+ JJ Runkel officer’s sabres?
The curved 32 1/4 inch blade is in good condition, feint remnants of the blue and gilt etching remaining, period nicks to the cutting edge, firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard is good but has lost a langet. The leather covered grip has a lot of wear and some small sectional chips, but is still sound / good; the twisted grip wire bindings are worn and aged and may be missing strand here and there.
A VERY bespoke and interesting sabre. Yours for just was £? (too late, now sold) and we expect this one to fly out at this price. Please quote item reference Z97. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1644-102x15x14 (1.284)
