Black fishskin grip for junior officer (mush scarcer than the regular officer’s white fishskin grip) plus RNR (Royal Naval Reserve) (much scarcer than RN / Royal Navy). So, a very scarce sword indeed! A quality sword but no maker’s or retailer’s name etched to the ricasso, so likely 1917-1918 when numbers counted for more then convention. Given the condition, we very much doubt that the officer owner got to wear this item much at all past commissioning.
The 31 inch blade is in good condition, etching clear, but with some patina / light rust patches and the proof slug missing; firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with “R N R” and fouled anchor to the cartouche is in good condition, the backpiece a little astray from the grip at one point. The black fishskin grip and associated grip wire bindings are good. Original sword knot aged and with a little wear but is good. Leather belts with King’s Crown a little aged / worn but good. The all weather bag is aged but sound (in above average condition).
Really nice example at a really really nice price, just (was) £675, now £540 . Please quote item reference Z55. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1578-Golf (2.217)
