Etched to Fenton Brothers Ltd Sheffield, Sword Cutlers to the War Office. Likely mid war, circa 1916 to 1917. Complete with leather field service scabbard and frog.
The 32 1/2 inch blade has several smaller rust patches, age and wear, but the etching is still clear. Blade firm in the hilt (the pommel will unscrew to allow a basket hilt to be fitted instead; no, there is not a basket hilt with this sword, just the cross hilt that you see). The black fishskin grip good, some white paint or other spots (probably removable). The twisted grip wire bindings are good. The field service leather scabbard with age and wear, the leather slightly shrunk and the stitching having come apart near the chape. The leather frog with age and a broken strap is still fairly good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Nice example, fair price. was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Z45. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1568-golf (1.772).
