Etched at the ricasso to J. Levy & Co R.N Outfitters Portsmouth, this sword is late Victorian. On the all weather carry bag are the original officer’s initials “J. W.” (plus “R. N.” for Royal Navy), so it may be possible to identify that officer. Black fishskin grip for junior officer; much rarer than regular white fishskin RN swords.
The 31 1/4 inch blade is in overall good condition but with some light rust spots / patina patches (now treated), firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard in very good condition and retaining much if not most gilt. The black fishskin grip has a little age / wear but is good. The twisted grip wire bindings have come loose and are partially incomplete in places. The leather with gilt metal fittings scabbard is generally good; the folding guard section of the sword locates onto the top scabbard locket’s retaining pin as it should. The sword draws and sheathes well. The brown leather carry bag is aged but sound to good.
Nice sword! Less common black fishskin grip and the original carry bag as well, all for just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Z40. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1565-golf (2.268).
